this post is just to react to jen's post about the UP budget cut.. this is pop-activism. and i do hope it goes somewhere..
we iskolars ng bayan are yet again facing one of the consequences of the unwise judgments of those in power-->ANOTHER AND EVEN BIGGER BUDGET CUT. some say its because the country doesnt have any budget. please, spare us lousy excuses and actually put truth in the crap you say. the problem isnt in the budget per se, but its allocation. it is stated in the constitution that education should be the priority but obviously that isnt the case now. and yes, aquino did pass a law providing that debts should be prioritized too. FINE, i say. so theyre both constitutional. but to prioritize one over the other at a very large margin is questionable. and to think that the country wouldnt really benefit from it except that if we get to pay the interest then we can loan AGAIN then cut even more off the education and basic services budgets just to pay for the interest AGAIN so that we can loan AGAIN and i bet you get the picture now.
some are saying that its okay if UP raises its tuition because supposedly, more students are from the middle class and up.. question is, WHY? a)parents from the provinces couldnt afford to send their kids to manila to study college. b)some would rather work. c)and this is what most people say--because the quality of education from private schools is supposedly higher. but really, its irrelevant. because whether we have the capacity or not to pay for the actual cost of UP education is out of the question simply because it is our right. its constitutional. i dont get it why we are having such a hard time to assert something which is legally ours-->the right to quality education.
now, i wont be saying these things if the money would be rechanneled to other social services like health, sanitation, and the like. but to merely pay the interest of our debt? i really think its too much. i mean, if you cant NOT cut off from the budget, dont make it 357 million pesos!!!!!!!!!!! tangina, pano na yung may mga tatay na minimum lang ang kinikita?!tapos gagawin pang 12% ang VAT?!
sorry, but i really believe what we have is a hateful system. education ang pinaguusapan dito, pare. there shouldnt be a debate as to which is more important between education or debt servicing. sayang, ang daming kabataang makakapagpaganda lalo ng bansa natin. ang dami sanang kabataang makakaalis ng bulok na sistemang ito sa bansa natin. pero paano na? WALA NA. kinuha nyo na ang karapatan nila. inagaw nyo sa kanila. pano kayo nakakatulog sa gabi, ha?!
