OBLATION RUN 2005
theme: freedom of expression
the oblation:
a man with arms wide-stretched and face facing up, symbolizing selfless offering of one's self to his country. (wikipedia)
the Oblation, a symbolism of what a UP student should be:
selfless, ready to give up one's self for honor, truth, justice, a servant to humanity and to country.
The completely nude (the fig leaf was added to the nude figure upon suggestion of President Jorge Bocobo) figure of a young man with outstretched arms and open hands, with tilted head, closed eyes and parted lips murmuring a prayer, with breast forward in the act of offering himself, is my interpretation of the sublime stanza. It symbolizes all the unknown heroes who fell during the night. The statue stands on a rustic base, a stylized rugged shape of the Philippine archipelago, lined with big and small hard rocks, each and everyone of which represents an island. the Oblation Run:
the Oblation Run started during the Marcos Era when a movie entitled, "hubad na bayani (naked hero)" was not allowed to be shown. an APO fratman was among the actors, and so, the fraternity decided to hold its own film showing. however, the ticket sales were very low that they had to think of a "gimmick". after much brainstorming, they decided to have two brods run naked to promote the said film. since then, the Oblation Run has symbolized freedom, each year with a different theme, a different reason for "baring it all".
to me and other spectators, the Oblation Run may just be a group of fratmen running naked, but in reality, its more than that. those dudes running naked symbolize the UP student- fearless, brave, free.
