yesterday was our ds100's alternative classroom experience (ACLE). our group had to make bookmarks out of recycled materials with quotes from gandhi. grabe. all i can say is WOW. it was really tiring, april stayed here the other night and we werent able to sleep. i was assigned to deliver the closing remarks and i didnt have an idea how i was gonna make it. it was supposed to be in filipino but since i suck in filipino, i asked sir ponsaran if i could just do it in english and he said i could, and so i did. hahaha! i did it during the presentation so i wasnt able to pay attention to all of it. but i loved the presentation of zara's group about social realism and the renditions of the songs "tatsulok", and "rosas ng digma". i absolutely loved the poster about women empowerment by mawi, quincy, and maita. the poems were about transnational mining, mcdonaldized society, vfa, and the culture of poverty. basta, sobrang saya and worth it. :) grabe, i even called sir ponsaran just "ponsaran" in front of everyone and it was utterly humiliating.
here's my closing remarks:
good afternoon everyone.
Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Man is the maker of his own destiny, and I therefore ask you to become makers of your own destiny."
In this day and age when fatalism is no longer an option, each and everyone of us is encouraged to take action. Activism is not limited to rallies, pickets, and the like. Activism is advocating, making, and fighting for change. I believe that this Alternative Learning Classroom Experience is one of those many venues for advocating change. While it is a break from the monotony of class discussions, it is even more an eye-opener to socio, economic, and political usses. I hope that this practice would continue to deepen our consciousness on the society of which we are part of.
After having witnessed all the presentations regarding povert, injustice, gender bias, social equality, etc., we must ask ourselves, "what should we do about it?"
Just like what Gandhi also said, "Action for one's self binds, while action for the sake of others delivers them from bondage."
Thank you and good afternoon once again.
